History of Newcastle International Airport

After reviewing 18 potential sites for an airport to service the North-East of England, the Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council settled on Woolsington, located about 8 kilometers northwest of the city center, in 1929.

In July 1935, Secretary of State for Air Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister officially opened the airport (then known as Woolsington Aerodrome). It included a grass runway, clubhouse, hangar, workshops, and fuel garage, and it cost £35,000 to construct.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Flying Club, formerly based at Cramlington Aerodrome, relocated there and now manages the airfield on the council's behalf.

At Woolsington, one of many civil-operated flying schools set up to train aircrew for the RAF, No. 43 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School opened in June 1939 with a fleet of de Havilland Tiger Moths, Miles Magisters, and Hawker Hinds. The school was closed when World War II broke out in September 1939.

Supermarine Spitfire planes stationed at nearby RAF Acklington utilized the airstrip on occasion in 1940. No. 83 Maintenance Unit RAF was established in July of that year at Woolsington to rescue downed aircraft and reuse any salvageable components.

From February 1941 through 1943, detachments from the No. 278 Squadron of the Royal Air Force used the airstrip to launch air-sea rescue missions with Westland Lysanders and Supermarine Walrus.

From June to October of 1943, Woolsington was also home to No. 281 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, another air-sea rescue unit. No. 62 OTU, located out of RAF Ouston, operated the airfield as a satellite field from November 1943 to June 1945. In 1946, Woolsington was returned to the council.
